JOY 94.9 takes SHAG Roadshow to Bendigo

On Sunday April 28th, JOY 94.9 heads to Bendigo for the SHAG ROADSHOW – a Sexual Health and Gender outreach for LGBTI youth. Australia’s only “out” gay footballer Jason Ball has invited Bendigo City Councillor Helen Leach to shag.

Highlighting the importance of ‘community’ in relation to sexual health and wellbeing, the focus is on primary prevention of HIV, sexually transmissible infections (STIs) and blood borne viruses in gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer youth.

Presented by Dean Beck and a great mix of JOY presenters with special guests including Dr George The Healthy Bear, Jason Ball, Joel Creasy, Tom Jaspers, Ben Lancken and many more.

Coverage starts from noon, live from the Old Bendigo Fire Station on Melbourne’s JOY 94.9fm or online here.

As part of the coverage, Australia’s only “out” gay footballer Jason Ball has invited Bendigo City Councillor Helen Leach to attend the SHAG Roadshow this Sunday April 28 at the Old Bendigo Fire Station.

From midday, this sexual health and gender outreach event and broadcast for LGBTI youth will be presented by JOY.

Councillor Leach made local headlines in March following her letter to the Herald Sun Editor where she stated “Gay pride! What rubbish!”. The AFL have acknowledged homophobia is an issue within their code that needs to be addressed and are considering the possibility of holding a “Pride Round” during the 2013 football season.

Beyond Blue ambassador and Yarra Glen footballer Jason Ball will be in Bendigo this Sunday to participate in JOY 94.9’s SHAG Roadshow. Jason intends to highlight the importance of providing a level playing field for all people regardless of their sexuality, both on and off the field.

“Councillor Leach holds a unique position of leadership within the City of Greater Bendigo. That comes with a responsibility to ensure the rights of all citizens to which she serves. Bendigo’s LGBTI youth do not want to be treated differently, but they deserve to be treated equally,” said Jason Ball.

The Roadshow will broadcast live from the Old Bendigo Fire Station, this Sunday 28th April from 12 – 4pm.

This Sexual Health and Gender Outreach event is sponsored by Family Planning Victoria’s “Mind The Gap” project and is targeted to meet the diverse needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex youth aged 15 to 25 years of age.
