New radio jock in town for a strictly limited season

It may be on stage but The Sydney Theatre Company’s latest play is right up the radio industry’s alley.

Talk, written and directed by Jonathan Biggins explores how the 24-hour news cycle is spurred on by the influence of social media.

The relationships that bind modern journalism, the justice system and the political establishment all come under acerbic scrutiny.

John Waters, plays John Behan, a rampaging radio talkback host filling the airwaves with a daily diet of moralising opinion.

John has the city in the palm of his hand. He fills Sydney’s airwaves with biting wit and easy answers, hard facts be damned.

“2MD the Power of Talk, what would you like to speak to John about today? Cyclists, righto. Any particular aspect of cycling? Well I agree, they should have to obey the road rules. Okay… no no, save it for John, I’ll put you on hold… John, line seven, it’s your favourite, bike paths.”

Yesterday, he overstepped the mark. Today, the police have come knocking and a trial-by-media threatens to get out of control.

Locking himself in his studio and broadcasting live, John Behan is not going to go quietly, even if a man’s life is on the line. Twitter explodes. The court of public opinion seems firmly on his side. He has control of the airwaves and ratings are through the roof.

As he and his producer Belinda, learn that his words have major personal consequences, newsrooms across town are going into overdrive.

On her first day as Acting Editor of the city’s major tabloid, Julie is brazenly determined to get the story that will sell, while over at the national broadcaster, retiring newsman Taffy has one final tale of his own to tell. But without the right platform, is anyone going to listen

Fuelled by the controversy, will they reveal the truth? Perhaps. Or will they toe the line for the sake of their jobs? More likely.

Find out from opening night Friday 7 April 2017 at 8.00pm Drama Theatre, Sydney Opera House.
