RNZ boss proposes global digital news and information service

Radio New Zealand’s chief executive is calling on the world’s public service broadcasters to join forces in providing a global digital news and information service.

Speaking at the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association conference in Glasgow, Thompson said the international news service he envisaged would give public service broadcasters a global reach, comprehensive coverage of breaking news and a global perspective on key issues.

He said it would be a powerful demonstration of public service broadcasters working together to exploit the digital world for the benefit of the societies they serve.

In New Zealand, Thompson is also on the record saying RNZ will need to change its priorities to concentrate more on online media delivery.

In light of the cancellation of the Australian Television service this week and the proposed renaming of the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association to ‘Public Media Alliance,’ the call may prove to be a timely idea for public broadcasters.
