Songs of 74: I am Pegasus / Ross Ryan

This year Radioinfo will take you back 50 years to the songs that were released and charted in 1974. It was a mighty fine year for music.

‘I am Pegasus’ was released in September 1973 and was an early No 1 of ’74 for most states of Australia with the Kent Music Report saying it only reached No 2. It was written and sung by a then 22 year old Ross Ryan (whose name does mean horse), formerly of Kansas but now living in Perth after several years on a 3000 acre sheep farm in Western Australia.
Ross Ryan had the best kind of agent, a fellow called Al Maricic. Maricic heard that Roy Orbison‘s support act for his 1972 tour of Australia, a comedian of all things, had abruptly pulled out. Maricic sent Ryan up to Darwin as a stand in. Roy really like him and so Ross joined Orbison for the rest of the tour.
Off the back of that, ‘I am Pegasus’ was released by EMI and slowly made its way up the charts to No 2 three months later.
In 2019 a shop in Melbourne decided to celebrate the 45th anniversary of this song by playing ‘I am Pegasus’ on repeat, non stop, for 45 days, That shop, Carter Bros Fruit and Veg, in Silvan, might need a nudge on the new milestone and get Ross Ryan back in the saddle for some live performances again.
