Spirit jocks holed up in the station as Cyclone Rusty hits Hedland

Sebba files first exclusive report for radioinfo as they batten down the hatches

With category 4 Cyclone Rusty bearing down on Hedland, Robbie Klitzing the breakfast jock and Sebba Claassen in afternoons have set up camp in the studios of Spirit 1026 working around the clock to keep the town informed.

Sebba told radioinfo, “The breaky announcer Robbie and I are going to sleep in the Station throughout the cyclone and bring the news and updates to all of our local community members as it comes to hand.”

The boys started preparations as soon as the first warnings were issued. They are equipped with a generator and plenty of fuel in case the power goes out.

“It’s a pretty unique experience being a young radio announcer. Definitely a story to tell,” says Sebba.

Sebba’s promised to share the story with us as the drama unfolds. Here’s his first report…

We are usually local from 6am til 4pm weekdays, but we’ve decided to opt out of the network and keep the show local until the Cyclone threat has been given as all clear.

It just gives us the best chance keep the listeners informed with every little detail possible of Cyclone Rusty.

We are taking in turns pulling 4-5 hour shifts each, as well as our normal weekday shifts throughout the day

We have certainly applied ourselves for the long haul. We’ve stocked up both our Macbooks with TV series and Movies. I just watched Argo and I’m a massive Ricky Gervais fan so I’ll be watching Life’s Too Short episodes and his new series Derek to pass the time whilst not presenting.

We have also utilised our station’s facebook page and we’ve created a new page dedicated to keeping the community in touch with each other. It’s called, “Cyclone Rusty Red Alert- What are you up too?” where people can post there status and let each other know what there doing.

We’ve had an impressive response. Lots of people sitting at home, watching dvds, eating baked beans and tuning into us on the Spirit 1026.

Cyclone Rusty is set to intensify overnight and we’ll have some lashing winds throughout tomorrow and be expecting the full brunt of the force at around 7pm tomorrow night.
