The Networks

SCA

Another patchy result for SCA. Both their brands are up in Brisbane and Adelaide but down in Melbourne. While in Sydney: one up, one down.

In Sydney there will be a big sigh of relief that 2Day has nudged upwards once more on the back of the ever resilient Kyle and Jackie O breakfast show which is just shy of double figures on 9.9. They have kicked well clear again of WS-FM’s Jonesy and Amanda to be a comfortable FM leader in Sydney.

But Triple M shed a whole 1.0 to land on a 5.3 share with the football season coming to a close. The drop came despite a solid breakfast performance by The Grill Team. The daytime shifts, though, Morning and Afternoons shed 2.4 and 2.5 share points respectively.

In Melbourne, where Triple M’s footy coverage is well established the station edged higher on the back of weekend figures that made up for a small drop in Breakfast.

Perhaps the biggest disappointment for SCA was the Fox FM result. The station slid down to an 8.2 share to level peg with GOLD for number one FM honours in Melbourne. The first vtime since 2005 that the station has not been outright FM leader.

In Brisbane and Adelaide the Triple M and Today brands both did well with the type of unspectacular but sustainable gains that programmers love.

In Perth a tiny little gain of 0.1 wasn’t enough to retain a share of the lead with 96fm which gained 0.4 to kick clear. 92.9 shed just 0.2 and ended up 6th on the ladder.

DMG

Once again a great result for DMG with a spectacular jump for smoothfm in Sydney: up 1.3 to a 6.8 putting it ahead of WSFM, MIX and Triple M. Perhaps demonstrating the difference between the two markets, smooth in Melbourne also went up but with a more modest 0.2 gain to a 5.6 share.

On the Nova side of things, DMG couldn’t be happier with the network now claiming to be number one nationally.

Sydney’s 96.9 took second place on the FM band behind 2Day with Fitzy and Wippa finally getting some reward for all the hard work with a 1.0 rise. Melbourne’s NOV100 was also in the black column with rising shares overall and in most sessions.

In Brisbane, Nova retained second place overall, albeit with a small drop in share. While in Adelaide it had a small gain in share (0.5) to consolidate number two FM spot behind Mix. Also, while in Adelaide, lets not forget DMG’s only AM talk station, FIVEaa which put on 0.4 to consolidate second place behind the ABC.

The Perth result was a good one too. A 0.8 gain putting Nova 93.7 into third spot just 0.1 behind MIX 94.5.

ARN

From the beginning, wise industry heads suggested that smoothfm might eat into WSFM’s core audience. Some are saying that this is the survey where that thinking is confirmed as they point to the spectacular rise by smoothfm in Sydney which  was matched by the spectacular fall of WSFM. From knocking on the door of FM leadership last survey, the station has shed 1.0 to be well behind leader 2Day. Worse still the Jonesy and Amanda breakfast show figures collapsed from the heady 9.0 share from last tome to 6.7.

At least there is some solace for ARN in the fact that MIX edged a little higher with steady upward movement in both Breakfast and Drive.

Once out of Sydney, though, it’s all sunshine and lollipops for ARN.

In Melbourne, the news was even better for MIX with a nice little 0.5 gain overall with most sessions on the rise or at least steady. GOLD performed well too with a 0.5 gain.

In Brisbane 97.3FM consolidated its number one spot overall and the Gold brand carried by the venerable 4KQ on AM shone with another solid gain to lane on a 7.4 share.

Adelaide too remains a happy hunting ground despite both stations losing a fair chunk of share. MIX102.3 went down 1.5 but retains outright leadership while Cruise1323 dropped 1.0.

Fairfax Radio

Good news first. Fairfax Radio’s only metro FM, 96FM has gone to number one in Perth with a 12.5 share.

With the election and politics all the buzz one would expect that talk stations would do well – which they did last survey – but not so this time.

Fairfax Radio’s flagship 3AW marked time on a 13.5 share to make it a comfortable winner over the ABC and then daylight to third place in Melbourne. Coincidently, the network’s easy listener MAGIC also marked time on the same 4.6 share it was handed in the previous survey. It’s Brisbane equivalent, 4BH eased slightly (-0.2).

But the Brisbane talker, 4BC was handed a shocker: down 1.5 to a 5.8 share. Perth’s 6PR also went down. – 0.9 to land on 7.3.

That leaves Sydney’s 2UE as the ongoing problem child. To put a positive spin on the fact that it dropped another 0.2 in share, it’s main rival 2GB shed 0.5. But that’s not much consolation when GB is number one on a 13.0 share and UE is 11th on 4.6 with breakfast down to a 3.3.

triple j

After a blinder last survey where triple j went up in every market and scored first place in Perth, you just knew they had to come back to the field. They kind of have, but only a little bit.

They’ve actually gone up in Brisbane by 1.1 to a very respectable 8.4 overall. They’ve also gone up a smidgen in Sydney and have remained exactly the same in Adelaide. In Melbourne they dropped 0.7 and in Perth, where they experienced the biggest rise of last survey,  they’ve plummeted by 1.8 to relinquish the number one spot and come in fourth. Still, on an 11.2 share and only 1.3 from the lead, no one at the j’s should be complaining.

ABC Local Radio

While AM stations generally had a great Survey 5, Survey 6 was more of a mixed bag for ABC Local Radio. The brand’s least successful station was Sydney’s 702 which shed 1.0 but remained number two behind 2GB and only one of two stations in double digits.

In Melbourne 774 eased back slightly by just 0.2. And, like Sydney, a solid number two (behind 3AW) and only one of two stations in double digits.

From there, it was all on the up and up. Brisbane: up 0.3. Adelaide: up 0.6 and Perth: up 0.5.
