Triple M Newcastle has consolidated its lead in the latest GFK survey for the Hunter.
Up slightly to 17.5 overall, Triple M leads stablemate Hit106.9 (12.7) from triple j (12.5) and the ABC Newcastle (9.8).
The other two commercial stations continue to trail with NEW FM improving a little to be at 8.1 while 2HD has lost 1.8 to be back on 6.2.
Tanya & Steve (Triple M) continue to lead breakfast gaining slightly to 18.5, with Jenny Marchant & Dan Cox (ABC) dropping 0.6 to 13.8 and Ben & Liam (triple j) gaining 2.2 to move into third place with 12.6.
Nick Jess & Simon (Hit106.9) also improved slightly, up 0.7 to 11.5 but not enough to hang onto third spot.
At the other end Richard & Kim (2HD) have lost almost half their audience, down 3.0 to 5.4
Looking at the numbers (cumes), Triple M’s audience of just under 160,000 and Hit106.9’s 138,000 gives the SCA stations 253,000 listeners per week, leaving their commercial competitors NEW FM and 2HD with just 112,000 and 52,000 respectively.
Triple M’s breakfast with 94,000 and Hits 79,000 also makes a formidable combination
THE SPIN
Although MMM dominates overall ratings in Newcastle, there is a distinct pattern Monday to Friday between 0900 and 1200. 2HD's highest rating program is the John Laws show at 8.6%. That is 2HD is the highest rating talk station in the weekday 0900-1200 period. Either side, of this timeslot, the ratings resemble the rest of the day.
While not privy to the ratings, there should be a breakdown of the ratings on the weekends in the afternoon between 1200-1800. There is continual irregularity to the format: sometimes its sporting coverage and sometimes it's talk.
