Vale sports broadcaster, Drew Morphett

Legendary sports broadcaster, Drew Morphett, has died suddenly, aged 69.

He was found by his wife Karen at their Pakenham home last night.

Melbourne’s 1116 SEN has paid tribute to Morphett who retired from his media duties last year. He worked predominately as an AFL and cricket commentator for the ABC and Channel 7. He also worked on numerous Olympic Games.

In 2014, Morphett received an Order of Australia Medal, thanks to his contribution to the broadcasting industry.

In an interview on This is Your Sporting Life, he said, “You get wrapped up in the emotion, and you hope from beyond the microphone, you can get that emotion out there to the bloke who is driving the tractor, or in the car going to Mum’s place for Christmas,”

Fellow broadcaster Anthony Hudson paid tribute on SEN’s Crunch Time. He said of Morphett. “He was a broadcaster who was composed all the time.”
