Women in Radio shoot down TEN’s Pilot Week

It’s happened again!

A list, a team, a group of people is named and, like the Public Bars of old, they’re men only. The Ladies Bar’s around the corner, luv.

This time it’s Network TEN’s innovative Pilot Week. Bereft of its own ideas for badly needed new content, the network’s managed to squeeze out the bright idea to let others come up with new ideas and make it into a game show starring Gold Logie winner Grant Denyer and co-host Angela Bishop

Pilot Week will include new show ideas from the likes of Rhys Darby, Stephen Curry, Harley Breen, Troy Kinne and Dave O’Neil. On top of that there’s Kyle Sandilands with an already publicised show called Trial by Kyle and (for some, perhaps the funniest of the lot in the strangest of ways) is former politician Sam Dastyari as well as a Saturday night show with Rove McManus

Viewers will get to vote on which of these shows, if any, they wish to see continue into full series production for broadcast in 2019.

Take a close look at the list of presenters and you’re sure to notice what they have in common. If you said that most of them are regulars on radio, you wouldn’t be wrong. But the correct and definitive answer is that they’re all men. Every one of them.

This fact did not escape a number of radio presenters that happen to be women.

To start ball rolling was Triple M’s Drive co-host Jane Kennedy (pictured abve right) who tweeted…

“Oh Look!! How very exciting for all these men!!! And look! … There’s a lady in this picture with the remote control so she can watch all the clever funny men who have the opportunity to pilot their own shows”

Then others weighed in…

Meshel Laurie

“To be honest babe, I’m over it. Can’t be bothered spending my time and energy begging for a seat at a table where I’m not valued. I put my efforts into other places now.

“As I’ve said before, the constant casting of “straight women” with male comedians on Australian TV. Gives a very clear impression that men are funny and women are there to laugh at them.”

Magda Szubanski

“Mate I’ve been an integral part of several of the highest rating shows in this country and I agree with Jane. (Who by the way has been an integral part of many treasured shows herself!! ) We hoped after Kath and Kim things would change. But no. Women still can’t get a guernsey.”

Em Rusciano

“My love for @jane_l_kennedyhas just reached fever pitch. Channel 10 have a pilot week coming up, of the EIGHT shows they’re trying exactly ZERO are fronted by women and exactly EIGHT are straight, white, men. I’ve got a show idea, so do about FIFTEEN other funny women I know. POOR FORM.”

Jane Kennedy – again

“Here’s the thing. I DO have so many funny men in my life. And the guys in this photo (with the exception of Sam Dastyari) are all funny buggers. I am curious to know if any women were given the opportunity to propose a show ??? I’m also not counting “Co-hosts” btw.

One of those “funny buggers” is Dave O’Neil. You can catch the conversation below.
