Mia Freedman back, Mamamia Out Loud atop the Australian Podcast Ranker

The January Triton Australian Podcast Ranker is out and Mamamia Out Loud is no 1, with Mia Freeman, Mamamia founder and podcast co-host, returning from long service leave.

Hamish and Andy dropped to No 8, but that was as a result of no new episodes being released in January due to the pair taking their ‘Government Mandated Summer break’, but their back catalogue Hamish and Andy Plus + project cracked the top ten, meaning in a month with no new audio the boys are still getting more than a million downloads.

For Mamamia Out Loud it was a record month of downloads too, more than 2 million against 25 new episodes and a valuable demonstration that people are still listening over the festive break and if their favourites are away, they’ll find new options.

Mamamia also had three podcasts in the top 20 which was otherwise news heavy. The Daily, from the New York Times was the only non local entry in the top 10. Half of the top 20 were news themed. Four were from the ABC.

With the awful events that occurred in Bondi in January, Ben Fordham, who returned from summer break early to cover them, saw his 2GB catch up podcast up 16 places to No 29, alongside the increased news consumption.

The Australian Ashes wrapping up was also reflected in cricket podcasts dropping, but other general sports picking up ahead of season 2026.

Three final notes –Life Uncut has now made the switch to LiSTNR and held firm to 9th spot with 300,000 monthly listeners. It will be interesting to see how the end of their networked radio program and relationship with ARN does or doesn’t affect their ranking across the year.

Australian True Crime, the long running podcast hosted by former radio presenter Meshel Laurie has moved to iHeart. It was the top ranked true crime podcast at #14 (+10) with the surge coming ahead of the launch a new national radio show, True Crime Tonight, across the KIIS Network later in 2026, which will surely add to its listening numbers.

Additionally, with the Inspired Unemployed reviving their podcast with LiSTNR, that too will add new competition to the top 5 when it commences in April.
