Comedian Dave ‘Hughesy’ Hughes did the rounds from a hospital bed this morning after suffering five broken ribs and a punctured lung at the AFL Legends Match for Prostate Cancer at Marvel Stadium. He did manage to kick a goal after injury!
Speaking on Triple M’s Mick in the Morning, Hughesy revealed he had joked at half-time about having a punctured lung after being hit by Andrew Embley, only to later discover he did. Co-host (and opponent on the field last night) Nick Riewoldt said Hughesy’s effort was “one of the toughest things” he’s seen on a football field and explained that Hughesy had even continued on until 2am at the Legends Game afterparty. Hughesy’s wife Holly had taken to hospital at 5am. You can listen to that chat below:
Later, and more heavily medicated, on The Fox’s Fifi, Fev & Nick (Brendan ‘Fev’ Fevola and Nick Cody both also played last night on opposing teams, and backed up for work this morning)
Fifi Box: “He was unfairly beaten up a few times!”
Fev: “He was assaulted!”
Fifi: “[We believe he is] heavily medicated on Fentanyl and Endone, but we’ve got him on the phone.”
Fev: “You made a few blunders, but you gave everything to the Victorians. When you were laying down after [Mitch Robinson] Robbo hit you with his brute force, I reckon that cracked a few ribs!”
Hughesy: “No mate, the ribs were cracked in the first incident with Andrew Embley…”
Fev: “… Mate, that wouldn’t have cracked five!”
Hughesy: “I kicked a goal, and I was celebrating for just a second and then Robbo smashed me! The crowd wanted me to go back out there; I would have died. I’m lying in a hospital bed and it’s hard to breathe… I’m going to come good. I saw the footage of [Shane] Crawford with my name on the board, saying ‘Everyone has to hurt this guy!’ This is really unfair.”
Fev: “Are you going to be okay? What’s the recovery?”
Hughesy: “I don’t know… I may never leave hospital. (laughs) I was groaning in the morning and my wife said, ‘We have to go to hospital’, and I said, ‘I can’t get out of bed!’ We ended up driving to the hospital. There’s not a lot of breath in me guys, so I can’t talk too much.”
Fifi: “Oh, what a terrible outcome!”
For the record the All Stars won last night, 3.13.7 (112) to 3.11.11 (104). That’s Nick Riewoldt and Nick Cody’s team. Fev and Hughesy’s Victorian team copped defeat, but for a very good cause. More than $1 million was raised for the Australian Prostate Centre.
