2006: radioinfo Year in Review

2006 has been a year where regulation of the radio industry was turned upside down by the new media laws. radioinfo has chronicled this year’s events day by day, publishing over 1,000 stories on news of interest to the radio industry. This, and another associated article, give you a glimpse into the year as radioinfo reported it and allow direct links to each of this year’s past stories.

When the next history of radio is written, this year will be viewed as the year regional radio networks fought the harsh government restrictions hastily added to the media law changes to appease regional backbenchers. Even though, on paper, that battle was lost, 2007 will see whether the war was eventually won by stealth when the review of regional radio delivers its verdict on whether the excessive restrictions are really needed or not.

This year will also be seen as the year the next steps were taken towards digital radio and the year WorldAudio, the company that put a bunger up the bum of the radio industry about digital radio, folded due to a flawed business plan.

The radio industry lost a few good mates during this year including: Dawn Lake, John McCormack, Keith Glover, Daddio Don Lund, Richard Carelton, Ken Birch and Tokyo Rose. We almost lost Derryn Hinch who survived both ‘a life threatening illness’ and a sexual assault charge, Stan Zemanek was treated for a brain tumuor, and Rowan Barker recovered from his cruel Christmas attack and went on to win an ACRA.

In regional programming, MRRWorks developed several specifically targeted programs for miners and truckies and Charles Wooley challenged John Laws for dominance of the morning talk slot in regional radio, but Laws fought back, eventually increasing the number of stations in his relay network. North Queensland stations covered a major cyclone, which took some of them off air, and stations also covered fires and droughts in a tough year for Australian farmers.

Community Radio stations faced increased scrutiny by the regulator ACMA about breaches of advertising and sponsorshiup guidelines, and began a new regime of licence renewals which puts increased pressure on stations for better management practices.

The Commercial Radio sector decided to persist with the diary method for its capital city surveys and the Community Radio sector released the second set of figures from its listenership survey.

DMG’s Vega stations failed to get traction with its original lineup and format, with changes soon introduced that left Wendy Harmer out in the cold, reversed most shared Melbourne-Sydney programming decisions, and saw significant format changes that by the end of the year showed small positive gains. Southern Cross trimmed costs, especially at 2UE, ARN’s parent company APN is in play with a continuing bid from Tony O’Reilly, and Austereo’s main share holders sold down their share of the company to take advantage of good share prices driven by media-merger speculation.

The ABC got a new Managing Director Mark Scott and a new Chairman Maurice Newman, resulting in the usual commentary about board stacking. Former Chairman Donald McDonald retired after two terms and will be remembered as someone who guided the ABC through a difficult period while quietly championing the corporation’s integrity. The national broadcaster also introduced new codes of editorial practice late this year and appointed an editorial ‘watchdog’ to enforce the policies.

Radio got into bed with the internet on various fronts during the year, the most noteworthy being the ground breaking ‘Unearthed’ website developed by triple j. Overseas, Bruce Willis and Bob Dylan both got radio gigs and Howard Stern finally moved to satellite radio.

Several new books were launched about the radio industry during the year, the most controversial being Jonestown about Alan Jones . Others included: Whose ABC? The Australian Broadcasting Corporation 1983-2006 by Ken Inglis, Wayne Mac’s Don’t Touch That Dial, and Steve Ahern’s Making Radio.
