2SER’s The History Lab is shortlisted for the NSW Premier’s History Awards

The History Lab podcast made by Impact Studios at the University of Technology Sydney, with media partner 2SER, has been shortlisted as a finalist in this year’s Digital History Prize for the NSW Premier’s History Awards.

The podcast is the brainchild of historian and host Associate Professor Tamson Pietsch, who in 2018 pitched to co-creator and Executive Producer Emma Lancaster the idea of “an audio experiment where we ‘do’ history for your ears”.

Assoc. Professor Pietsch is “thrilled that two episodes from the third season of History Lab have been shortlisted for such a coveted award. Podcasting is a powerful digital medium that allows researchers to connect with audiences beyond the academy. Not only does it ensure research achieves maximum engagement and impact, but it also provides a platform that can reveal the challenges and excitement of the research process.”

The shortlisted episodes are:

  • ‘Making a Fortune’ ; (collaborating historian, Dr Alana Piper – UTS FASS)
  • ‘Reading the signs’ (collaborating academic, Dr Trish Luker – UTS Law)

The episodes were made by Tamson Pietsch, Emma Lancaster, Olivia Rosenman, Zoe Ferguson, Dr Belinda Lopez, Sarah Mashman, Julia Carr-Catzel and Allison Chan, and have been shortlisted alongside digital works from the national broadcaster, including ‘The Eleventh’ by ABC Audio Studios and ‘The History Listen’ by ABC Radio National.

The winner of the NSW Premier’s Digital History prize will be announced at an award ceremony at the NSW State Library on September 4th, as part of the History Council of NSW History Week.
