Split Enz sang History Never Repeats, but in the case of Kim Goldsmith it has in the most serendipitous fashion as she returns to the ABC Western Plains radio station where she began her career, to host Breakfast.
Kim grew up on a mixed farm north of Coonamble and joined the ABC back in 1992 (pictured above) as the inaugural Western Plains Rural Reporter, a role she held until 1996.
Now, three decades later, she’s back on air helping listeners across the region start their day.
Since departing the ABC in ’96 Kim has built a wide-ranging career in media and communications, spanning agriculture, local government, regional development, and the arts. For the past 20 years she has also worked as a media artist, creating sound and video works that have been presented both in Australia and overseas. Her passion for recording the sounds of the natural world has taken her into the paddocks and bushlands of the Western Plains, capturing the voices of the landscape.
ABC Western Plains Editor Nick Lowther said Kim was the right choice for the role:
“What I love about Kim is her love of the community and her long-fostered connections. We’re in a unique situation where a lot of our team are either born here or have worked in the area for a considerable amount of time — it’s a brilliant asset to have. It’s also a remarkable region to cover, a land area larger than Belgium with very different communities, so I’m grateful for this team’s connection to everything from towns of grapes to grain.”
Kim says she’s looking forward to sharing mornings with the region and community she’s always called home.
