98five listeners restored sight to cataract sufferers around the world

Yesterday, 1970 lives in developing countries were dramatically improved thanks to the generosity of 98five’s listeners.

They donated $32 each that covers a 12-minute cataract removal operation, as part of 98five’s Miracles Day with CBM.

Brekky with Kirste and Morro broadcast live throughout the week from Thanh Hoa, Vietnam, where they witnessed firsthand how the simple procedure, performed at the local eye hospital, had a long-lasting impact on the lives of a Vietnamese patient; their families, communities and future quality of life.

98five joined forces with 25 radio stations around Australia to restore sight to more than 25,000 cataract sufferers.

98five’s listeners jumped on board by taking a selfie with their hand over one eye and posting it on their social media networks with the hashtag #HandsUpForMiracles.

Cataracts are the world’s leading cause of blindness, with more than 20 million people worldwide living in virtual darkness because of them, and 90 percent of all people with vision impairment live in developing countries.

Kirste and Morro shared many stories of lives that have been changed with the simple operation on-air and on 98five’s website.

“Kirste and I have had the honour of meeting incredible people in Thanh Hoa,” said Brekky host Paul “Morro” Morrison.

“We got to witness 69-year-old Vietnam veteran Khanh’s cataract surgery and watch him walk out of the room with restored vision for the first time in over 20 years. He couldn’t stop telling us what he was going to do now with his new hope.

“You’re always richer when you’re generous. Thank you so much Perth for your contagious generosity and providing the miracle gift of sight for the poorest of the poor.
