This weekend I received a mysterious email with the subject: Found Your Bus.
Initially I thought it was spam, or an update from a certain WSFM announcer who has a side hustle in restoring similar old buses, but no, this was something else.
Apparently atop the wonderfully named Lunatic Lookout in Lightning Ridge, NSW someone has dumped the 2MC Fun Bus.
From the look of those wheels a long, LONG time ago.
The front says it was a thing of beauty in its hey day.
Radio station 2KM, then based in Kempsey and most famous for discovering Slim Dusty, moved to Port Macquarie in 1980 and changed its name to 2MC (Mid Coast). It went FM in 2000 and I would guess this bus dates back to the heady early 80s.
2MC is now Triple M Mid North Coast, owned by SCA, with George ‘Sarge’ Sargent only a few months into a new breakfast role after a long run by the Strachan family, Mark and his son Alex. Mark has been in and around radio in the Port Macquarie area since 1989. Maybe he can help with stories of the glory of the Fun Bus?
Lightning Ridge is a long way from Triple M Mid North Coast’s address in Port Macquarie. 662kms to be exact. So how did the fun bus get from the Coast to the inland opal mining town nearish the Queensland border?
Let me know!
