ABC sets up Mandela tribute station

With news of the passing of one of the most significant figures of the twentieth century, Nelson Mandela, this weekend ABC Radio will pay tribute to his life and work.

A special program featuring material from the ABC Archives is now on air on ABC Extra on digital radio, streaming, mobile and the ABC Radio app.

Produced by Clive Hunton, the special program features speeches, interviews, memories, and musical tributes.

Highlights include:

·         A profile by ABC Local Radio’s John Cleary about the man whose impact on world history went far beyond the African nation to which he devoted his political life.
·         An interview by Margaret Throsby with Mac Maharaj who was a fellow prisoner and confidant of Nelson Mandela.  
·         An Australian perspective of South Africa during and after apartheid from former diplomat Bruce Haigh who met Nelson Mandela several times, and who gave his impressions for RN’s Waleed Aly.
·         Michael Rowland speaking with former prime minister Malcolm Fraser to recall the first time he met Nelson Mandela, and with former foreign minister Gareth Evans.
·         An interview with Nelson Mandela from 1994 the ABC’s southern Africa correspondent at the time, Marius Benson.
·         A documentary about the island prison where Nelson Mandela spent so many years comes from RN’s Hindsight.
·         An interview with RN’s Andrew West asked one of the former president’s biographers John Carlin, to sum up Mandela’s achievement…

The program will be repeated several times, so there will be many opportunities for people to tune in to listen and celebrate the life and work of the great man.

 

The broadcast will cease at approximately 6.00am Monday.
