ABC Takeover heads to Mildura in 2023

Mildura, in northwest Victoria, has been named the host city for next year’s ABC youth program Takeover

The program, run by the ABC in partnership with VicHealth, the Victorian Government and the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR), gives young people the opportunity to share their experiences with communities across Australia, through local and national ABC networks.

The project, which is in its second year, will work with high school-aged students to give them the skills to develop stories about their lives and what it is like to grow up in their region.

At least 30 students will be selected to have their stories broadcast across the ABC and to take part in the Takeover Mildura Youth Summit in May 2023, where they will develop ideas to make their community a better place for young people.

ABC Director, Regional and Local, Judith Whelan, said the first Takeover, held in Shepparton in May 2022, was a success.

Students tackled the stories important to them – covering issues such as drugs and alcohol, mental health, employment and access to education,” said Whelan.

Working with experienced ABC producers, these stories were heard on all ABC platforms and on programs as diverse as Australia WideLandlineNews Breakfast and triple j Mornings.”

Now it’s Mildura’s turn, and I have no doubt the young people from this dynamic region will engage just as strongly as Shepparton did in the first year.”

Executive Manager of Future Healthy group of VicHealth, Sarah Loh, said, “Takeover is a powerful initiative, giving young people the opportunity to share their ideas and stories on such a great platform.”

VicHealth is proud to be supporting Takeover Mildura and we’re looking forward to engaging with local young people from regional Victoria and hear their ideas for the future.”
