AFTRS announces new senior roles

The Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) has announced the appointment of seven senior staff who will take up new Discipline Lead roles in 2023 and the appointment of a new head of the School’s Masters program.

Andrea Ho joins AFTRS and the radio team as Discipline Lead for Radio and Podcasting.

She was most recently at the Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas, where she was the Director of Education.

Throughout her career Andrea has held many leadership roles, including as Head of Planning at ABC Regional and Local, Manager of ABC Radio Canberra, PD of ABC Radio Hobart, and founding co-director of the Economic Media Centre.

Juliet John is AFTRS’ new MA Screen Program Convenor.   The new Discipline Leads working with Juliet in the MA program are Pearl Tan (Directing), Roland Gallois (Editing), Natalie Beak (Production Design), Dr Tara Lomax (Screen Studies), Kate Stone (Screen Writing), Stephen Murphy (Sound).

AFTRS Director of Teaching and Learning, David Balfour, says, “AFTRS is delighted to welcome these seven brilliant educators and creatives to their new roles.  Working hand-in-hand with industry, AFTRS represents excellence in education and future-looking learning experiences. These exceptionally talented individuals will contribute enormously to the School and the quality of its teaching.

“2023 also marks AFTRS’ 50th anniversary, so we are excited to have these new roles represent the energy and innovation we are bringing to this next chapter of the School.”

Acting as Discipline Lead, Cinematography is Steve Arnold and acting in the role of Discipline Lead, Producing is Bethan Bruce.

Richard Welch (Documentary) and Cameron Patrick (Screen Music) will continue in their current positions as Discipline Leads.

Reflecting the growth and changes in industry, AFTRS will now have discipline leads for each program.

The new Discipline Leads replace the previous Head of Discipline roles.
