Anika Wells the new Communications minister, Michelle Rowland becomes Attorney-General

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has today announced his new cabinet with the ALP looking like they will have more than 90 seats in the House of Representatives.
The former Communications Minister Michelle Rowland will become Attorney-General replacing Mark Dreyfus. Stepping into Rowland’s shoes is North Brisbane MP Anika Wells (pictured). Previously Wells held the Sport and Aged Care portfolios. She will retain her role as Minister for Sport as well.

The new cabinet is sworn in tomorrow morning, Tuesday May 13 at 9am at Parliament House, with a full ministry meeting to follow.

Outgoing Communications Minister Rowland reaffirmed the importance of strong democratic institutions like media and courts as she left the Communications portfolio.

The foremost priority of any government is to keep Australians safe. At a time when democracy is being challenged, trust in our legal institutions and justice system has never been more important.

And so it is with great humility, and a profound sense of responsibility, that I approach this role.

I will build on the work of my esteemed colleague and friend, the Hon Mark Dreyfus KC MP, to uphold the rule of law, strengthen integrity, and maintain the public’s trust in Australia’s legal systems.

It says everything that is great about Australia that a girl from Western Sydney can study hard, work hard, and become the First Law Officer of the land. I will apply that same aspiration and work ethic to everything I do to serve the interests of all Australians.
