April Fools: The joke’s on you Merrick

Nova 96.9 prankster Merrick Watts got one on 2UE’s David Oldfield on April Fool’s day, but Ray Hadley fought back for the honour of AM morning talkback announcers, pranking Merrick in return. At Snow and Eagle FM, listeners were confused by their breakfast April Fool’s prank and in the West, listeners were outraged when they though a new bridge would replace the famous Mandurah Old Bridge.

Merrick, posing as seventy something year old Ken, lured David Oldfield into a discussion about swingers parties and gang bangs. Listen here.

Ray Hadley pranked Merrick with an over the top display of publicity photos in Merrick’s office.

This morning, listeners on Capital Radio Network stations 97.7 Snow Fm in Jindabyne and 93.5 Eagle Fm in Goulburn heard something a little different for their April Fools day prank.  The Snow Fm breakfast team (Josie Fitt & Guy Mylecharane) where on air in Goulburn after 8:30am, and Eagle Fm breakfast host George Mihalos was on air in Jindabyne after 7:30am.

A few listeners were sucked in to the joke and called wondering what was going on. Listeners later went back on their regular breakfast shows.

While in the west, 97.3 Coast FM listeners woke up to the announcement that the iconic ‘Mandurah Old Bridge’ would soon be replaced by a much more modern design, resembling the Sydney Harbour Bridge. This April Fools announcement sent Coast FM phones into overdrive, with concerned Mandurah residents, unhappy about the decision. Listeners were also advised that the traffic direction on Mandurah Terrace would be reversed (for the third time) during the construction of the replacement bridge.

97.3 Coast Crew announcers Aaron Chilcott and Ali Hill did an extraordinary job convincing listeners that the news was
true, together with an artist’s impression of the replacement bridge on www.coastlive.com.au and the opinions of
Member for Mandurah David Templeman and Councillor Dave Schumacher, who were also broadcast. The April Fools joke was finally revealed to listeners later on in the breakfast show, with most people admitting that they had forgotten today was the first  of April and relieved that the Mandurah Old Bridge and the traffic direction were staying as is!

Cliff and Nay seized not just April Fool’s Day but a few other days as well with a RadioWest stunt in Bunbury on Friday morning.

A few weeks ago the breakfast pair picked up on a survey of Big Things around the country and in the last week ran their own poll to find out what Big Thing could be built in the city.

At the same time, rabbits have run wild in the centre of town, so on Friday morning Cliff and Nay  unveiled the prototype for The Bunbury Bunny, a 210cm, 20kg rabbit. Despite some consternation from the Bunbury City Council, callers to Wake Up gave it a BIG thumbs up !
