Ben Lawrence has fulfilled a radio dream with a new role hosting mornings on Chilli FM in Launceston, Tasmania.
He announced his new role on LinkedIn saying:
“Almost 2 years ago to the day, I decided to put myself out there. I started dancing like an idiot at almost every St Kilda home game, trying to make people smile.
By coincidence, the first time I did this I was filmed by somebody that worked in media.
When I was a kid, I loved radio, I obsessed over every Hamish & Andy TV show, call Fifi & Jules, I went into the studios in Warragul for 94.3 Star FM as a ‘Weather Wiz Kid’ and got my mum annoyed because as a reward I chose a Ke$ha album instead of Robbie Williams, the host at that time joked that I was coming for their job, and I would have taken it without hesitation. (side note, they rejected my application for work experience a few years later).
Fast forward back to the dancing. I was 22, had no clue what I wanted to do, and was feeling lost. Then I got filmed by somebody with a job announcing on radio. I started seeking out work in the media industry, got rejected once, got rejected twice, and on the third time started work for ARN as a Street teamer.
Don’t get me wrong, at this point I had been livestreaming for years, and hosting trivia and MCing events across Victoria – so while this was my first “media” job, it was not my first entertainment job.
6 months later, I changed roles to a full time Broadcast Technologist edging ever closer to where I felt I needed to be.
Today, I achieve my dream. From today onwards, I am the Mornings host for Launceston’s number 1 radio station – Chilli FM, on air from 10-1 (plus the occasional weekend shift).”
