Bring back Bruce Mansfield to TV News

Bruce Mansfield used to read the news in the mid-late 70’s on Channel 10 Melbourne (Channel 0 as it was back then). He now presents the Nightline evening show on 3AW, with Philip Brady.

Channel 10 is now five decades old and will celebrate its 50th Birthday on Friday 1st August.

3AW has launched a campaign to have Bruce return to the Eyewitness News Desk, for that one night only, to read the bulletin.

The station has had posters and bumper stickers made up, and each night for the last two weeks a celebrity has endorsed the campaign. This will continue for the next few weeks.

Last evening 3AW launched a jingle, written and recorded especially for the campaign, by Australia’s most successful jingle writer Mike Brady.

One of the celebrity endorsements for the campaign is Ian McFadyen, who told a very funny story about how Bruce saved someone’s life. It seems a man was on a ledge ready to jump because he had not achieved his life’s ambition… to be an astronaught. Talking him down, McFadyen got him to look at Bruce Mansfield reading the tv news and said “if that guy can read the news, you can become an astronaught!” The man got down from the ledge.

The question is, will current newsreader Steve Quartermain step aside for that one night?

The station has also launched a facebook page to support the campaign, which already has a strong following.
