ComCare agrees to accept ABC Cancer Cluster workers comp claims

Workplace Relations Minister Joe Hockey has welcomed Comcare’s decision to accept workers’ compensation claims from nine women who worked at the ABC studios in Toowong, Brisbane.

The ABC’s Independent Review and Scientific Panel released their final report in June 2007. The report showed evidence of a significantly increased incidence of breast cancer at ABC Toowong for the period of 1994 to 2006.

The employees will now have access to a range of benefits under Comcare, including weekly income payments, which are payable until they return to work or reach retirement age.

The employees will also have access to occupational rehabilitation services and will be compensated for medical treatment costs as well as household services, attendant care costs or aids and appliances as they require.

Hockey has encouraged Comcare and the ABC to “do all they can to handle any further claims for compensation as efficiently and compassionately as possible.”
