Community radio tackles the NDIS

With the International Day of People with Disability approaching on Thursday 3rd December 2015, the Community Radio Network’s flagship current affairs program, The Wire has launched a special five part series focusing on the challenges presented by the National Disability Insurance Scheme.

In Brave New World – Exploring the challenges of the NDIS , The Wire takes a look at the key theme for this year’s International Day of People with Disability: “Inclusion matters: access and empowerment for people of all abilities”, and asks how the NDIS is addressing this key issue for people with disabilities, their carers and their service providers.

The series was produced by Executive Producer, Catherine Zengerer and Reporter Melissa Lahoud.

“When the NDIS was introduced in 2013, it was the biggest change to our health system since the introduction of Medicare. It was heralded as being all about choice and control,” Catherine Zengerer said.

“But two years on it seems that while many people are benefiting from the NDIS, there are both services and people who are falling through the cracks.

“I knew this was an issue that needed to be explored thoroughly which is why I’m proud The Wire is taking such an in-depth look at the struggles facing people and organisations engaging with the NDIS,” Ms Zengerer said.

Reporter Melissa Lahoud said: “Working on this series has given me an appreciation for the many ways the NDIS is supporting people with a disability, but it’s also highlighted the complexity of the scheme and how people are struggling to make sense of the changes and navigate the system.”

Brave New World – Exploring the challenges of the NDIS launches across the Community Radio Network on Monday 30th November and runs every day to Friday 4th December 2015 at 5.04pm AEDT.
