Coolangatta e-bike owner gifted brand-new bike on Triple M after viral theft

Coolangatta local Nick Harvey has received a brand-new, upgraded e-bike, after a Gold Coast business owner listening to Triple M Gold heard the awful and now viral tale about Nick’s original bike’s theft.

Nick joined Triple M Gold Breakfast with Leisel Jones, Liam & Spida in the first place to give an update following the widely shared incident which has clocked more than 5.3 million views on Instagram.

After having his bike stolen, Nick recognised the bike being ridden around in Coolangatta two days later. He called the police and a police officer ended up tackling the alleged thief off the bike. His hand got caught in the wheel and they spent an hour trying to get it out before having to cut apart the bike and the fellow’s finger.

Listening in to Triple M Erica, from Murf Bikes, phoned in to offer Nick, and the police officer, brand-new bikes, resulting in a heartwarming moment.

Nick: We went out for dinner at the Vikings on Friday night. We came out, my bike lock had been cut, and my bike was gone. My e-bike, my pride and joy, that I ride every weekend.

On Sunday, we went to Greenmount for a swim and I was pretty sure I saw a guy riding my bike. So, we chased him. It was the one that he stole, and we saw him on Sunday.

Leisel: How did you know it was yours? Was yours [easily] identified?

Nick: Yeah, it has a few things on it, so I knew it was mine. We drove around for like two hours trying to find him and we got him out the back of Coolangatta Surf Club, so we called police and waited for them to get there. The police officer took him out with a spear tackle and his fingered got very, very jammed in the back wheel. It was bad, it was very bad.

Liam Flanagan: So you didn’t want to approach him, you did the right thing. And when she took him down, he’s nearly lost a finger.

Nick: I think he’s lost the finger. I saw a photo… there’s not much left.

Liam: He was stuck, what happened?

Nick: He was there for like an hour, I reckon. Because of where it was, there was a lot of people around so he had a lot of people filming and telling him that he shouldn’t steal bikes and this is what happens.

And later:

Erica: I was driving to work and heard your story, and I hopped on the horn to give you a call! It’s out of control. It’s out of the corner from where we’re located, it’s all happened right in our hood. They are such good bikes and it will stand the test of time, unless a finger gets caught in it (laughs). We would love to give you a new upgraded, fresh model. You shouldn’t be riding around on a four-year old cut up bike. So come, pop in, and see us anytime for a newbie!

Nick: It was still doing really good but yes, a new one would be awesome! That’s epic. Awesome. Thank you so much, Erica.

Erica: Honestly, I think that female officer too! If she wants a Murf, she can give us a call! (cheers)

Liam: Now we’re talking! Thank you so much for your generosity, Erica. We love our Triple M family.
