After more than two decades on Cairns’ Star 102.7 Dave Warner has decided to pull up stumps. The recent Xtra Insight survey of the area saw Dave & co-host Inkie well on top in breakfast.
Warner literally stumbled on a job at Star during a Cairns holiday and has become a huge advocate for the local community.
He said:
“Breakfast radio is one of those gigs that require you to go all in, you never really clock off, it becomes you and you become it. The only way I’ve ever known how to do the job is to have it consume me, have it define me. So, after 20 years of giving it everything, and achieving more than I ever thought I could, I decided earlier this year that this would be my last.
A massive thank you to everyone I’ve worked with along the way, but especially to our listeners for allowing us into their lives each day and trusting us with their stories. Doing breakfast radio in FNQ, the most amazing and beautiful place in the world, has been the honour and privilege of my life. But now is the moment for me to take a long break, spend time with my family and then write the next chapter. So, it’s time to pull up stumps and hit the showers… and let some other lucky bastard have a crack at the best job on the planet.”
General Manager Jim Ybema added:
“Dave has been a breakfast announcer in Cairns for over 2 decades and he truly is a local, through and through. Dave is an Icon, an influencer and a highly respected community member.
Waking up every week morning at 4.30am for over 4800 days, sharing his life journey, local stories, along with lots of laughter and memories with our tens of thousands of listeners is a true testament. His connection with our listeners and passion for delivering amazing daily content is an absolute credit to Dave. We will miss Dave, there’s no doubt, however we wish him every success in his future endeavours, whatever that may be. Dave will always be part of the Star 102.7 family.”
Warner’s last day is Friday 15 December with the station’s new breakfast line-up to be confirmed in due course. Cairns’ Hit 103.5 will also change its lineup for 2024 with Bronte Langbroek (currently on air in Cairns with Guy “Cliffo” Clifton) joining Danny Lakey on the 90.9 Sea FM Breakfast show on the Gold Coast, which will be networked to regional Queensland Hit stations.
