Dean ‘Clairsy’ Clairs is leaving Mix 94.5, Pete Curulli is back

Dean ‘Clairsy’ Clairs is leaving SCA Perth’s Mix 94.5 Breakfast show, Clairsy, Matt & Kymba.

Clairsy has been with SCA for 30 years, the past 20 of those broadcasting on Mix 94.5 and his final day will be Friday 11 December 2020.

In most recent years, he has been co-host and anchor for the breakfast show, which celebrated its 1000th show milestone in October, and he says, “After 20 years with Mix 94.5, the time has come to move on to other adventures − both professionally, and with my wife Lori and all of our adult kids!

“If the next chapter brings with it half the fun I’ve had in my time with Mix 94.5, I’ll be more than happy. How lucky have I been − a radio fan boy since I started Media Studies at Greenwood High in 1981, who got to live his dream of working on radio in his hometown!

“I’d like to thank my many workmates past and present, including my most recent on-air teammates, Kymba and Matt, for some amazing radio and off-air memories.

And to the amazing listeners who have ever tuned in, called the station or said hello around Perth, I can’t thank you enough for helping my radio dreams come true.”

Over the years, Clairsy has established himself as a radio icon, known within the industry as a true gentleman, and respected for his professionalism and passion for radio. During Clairs’ tenure, Mix 94.5 has celebrated some of its most successful ratings, including 100 concurrent surveys as Perth’s Number 1 radio station from December 1999 to June 2012.

Head of Mix 94.5 Content, Erica McGee, says, “When I began my radio career at PMFM 92.9 in 1993, the first news bulletin I read was in Dean Clairs’ workday shift. And his generosity shone in that very first moment, in a live comment on air praising me for my first ‘live’ news read, and forever coining the nickname he has for me. Clairsy is one of Perth’s radio icons. His contribution to our company and our industry cannot be easily rivalled. We will celebrate him over the coming weeks and farewell him in style on 11 December, but our friendship will endure.”

Breakfast co-hosts Matt Dyktynski and Kymba Cahill joined McGee in their praise for Clairs.
Kymba says, “Clairsy has been an incredible colleague. Fun, professional and engaging, but most of all he is a very close friend. Clairsy has been my work husband for 11 years and I’m going to miss him greatly.”

Matt says, “Dean ‘Clairsy’ Clairs is a true gentleman in an industry known for its healthy egos. To have not only survived but continued at the highest level of broadcasting for over 30 years is nothing short of astonishing and is testament to his talent, professionalism and just how well liked he is throughout the industry. I’m going to miss his smiling face at 4:30 each morning.”

Stepping in for Clairs to join Kymba and Matt is Pete Curulli, who is well known to Perth audiences, having co-hosted Mix 94.5’s Drive show from 2015 to 2019, before moving to the Breakfast show on Hit92.9.

Curulli said: “I’m very excited to return to Mix 94.5, but this moment isn’t about me. I want to take this opportunity to say thanks so much to a radio legend for what he’s given to Perth over the last 30 years, to congratulate him on an amazing career, and to thank him for the friend and mentor he’s been to me over my own career. Stepping into Clairsy’s spot is an incredible honour, and if I can have half the career he’s achieved, I’ll be extremely happy. Thanks for everything, mate.”

Pete, Matt & Kymba will commence on the Hit Network’s Mix 94.5 on Monday 11 January 2021.
