Digital Radios in Cars: BMW is first

Australia has cracked the holy grail of digital radio – Cars. BMW Australia has announced it will be the first manufacturer in Australia to offer DAB+ as an option in its cars, with availability on 5 Series and 7 Series from May, and the new 6 Series upon launch.

While BMW drivers cruising the countryside won’t be able to receive digital radio yet, it is available so far in capital cities Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth, and the radio industry is pushing ahead on plans for regional expansion as fast as it can, frequencies permitting.

Listeners will be able to tune into all  existing commercial, ABC and SBS stations, and the newly launched community stations, in digital quality plus a wide range of new digital only stations.  Drivers will also be able to view additional information on their dash board, such as track and artist details whilst the music is playing; news headlines; weather information and more

BMW Group Managing Director Phil Horton says BMW has built its reputation in Australia being the pioneer of exciting new infotainment technologies and this innovation keeps them ahead. “BMW ConnectedDrive showcases BMW’s philosophy for enriching driving experience with the most cutting edge in-car technologies available today.”

The option will cost $750 on all 7 Series, and $900 on 5 Series Touring and Sedan.

CRA’s Joan Warner says today’s announcement by BMW is “a great step forward for drivers wanting to access digital radio in cars. Our research shows 33 % of commercial radio listening is in the car and with leading brands like BMW making digital radio available in their vehicles, the technology can only move from strength to strength.”
