Double J celebrates 25 Years of Nirvana’s Nevermind

This Saturday Double J celebrates 25 years since the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind, one of the most revered and influential albums of the past few decades. Nevermind sounded the death knell for hair metal, took alternative and grunge mainstream and gave a voice to a new generation.

Across the weekend, we’ll play archival interviews and a rare live set recorded by triple j at Melbourne’s Palace Theatre, as well as catch up with artists Nevermind had an impact on, including Courtney Barnett, Mia Dyson, Holly Throsby and more.

12pm Sat 24 Sept: Smells Like Teen Spirit Documentary

In this documentary, we look at the single that broke the album and made Nirvana an international household name. Voted #1 in triple j’s Hottest 100 of All Time in 2009, the doco goes back to the moment the tune took off in Australia and why the song, album and band are still considered so important to popular music culture.

4pm Sat 24 Sept: Nirvana Live at the Palace Theatre

In January 1992, as Nirvana were at the height of a world-wide frenzy, the band hit Australian shores with one of the most anticipated and intense live music experiences we’ve ever seen. It would turn out to be their only Australian tour and luckily triple j’s live music team were there to record it. Join us as we take you back to the jam packed, sweaty set at Melbourne’s iconic Palace Theatre.

12 – 6pm Sat 24 Sept: Music from 1991
