Double J celebrates 50 years of hip hop

All through August Double J will celebrate 50 years of hip hop music with some of the biggest and best voices and a look back at the key moments of the genre’s history.

August 10, The J Files will shine a light on Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper and groundbreaking artist Kendrick Lamar.

Then on August 11,  the day the genre was born, Double J will throw a huge hip hop party, with special editions of Take 5 and Desko and a three-hour block party hosted by Hau Latukefu.

Latukefu will also tell the story of hip hop throughout the month with Hau’s Hip Hop History, a series of short audio documentaries you can hear on Double J or via the triple j app or the ABC listen app.

Throughout the month Double J will look at defining albums including Jay Z’s career-defining LP, The Black Album. There will also be a replay of a 1998 set from Public Enemy, a 1987 interview with Run-D.M.C, plus everything from the Beastie Boys to Barkaa, Salt-N-Pepa to Andre 3000.

The Double J website has the complete rundown.
