There were tears, smiles and tributes today, as John ‘Macca’ MacKenzie wrapped up his final show on ARN’s 846 4CA in Cairns. Studio 1 has been named “The Macca Studio” in his honour.
Macca’s quick wit is certainly going to missed by his 4CA colleagues, who all dressed up in collared shirts and ties to pay tribute to this local legend of the airwaves.
Today’s final show was an emotional for many, particularly Macca himself and Luke Vitali, who’s been his producer for the last five years.
Earlier this month, after an incredible 52-year career on the airwaves, Macca announced that he was hanging up the headphones.
With over 10,000 broadcasts to his name, Macca has been a consistent and trusted presence on local radio – an advocate for Far North Queensland and a familiar voice for listeners across the region.
His impact has been immeasurable.
This week, guests from years gone by wished him all the best for the future, as have loyal, long-term listeners.
