In 1986, at age 16, FIVEaa‘s David Penberthy spent a year in Mexico as an exchange student with Rotary Exchange. When he finished school and while doing his journalism degree at the University of Adelaide, not only was he President of CISCAC, the Committee in Solidarity with Central America and the Caribbean, but David was also the frontman of ‘Australia’s premier Spanish language Mexican punk band’ Cerveza y Putas (you can Google the translation).

Commencing full time work with the Adelaide Advertiser in the early 90s and hosting FIVEaa talkback breakfast radio alongside Will Goodings for coming up to a decade, David decided that now was the right time to take a well deserved break.

From the end of June, for six months, David and his family will relocate to Spain.

He said:

“I want my own kids to have this same opportunity, and we are at a moment in our lives when the time is right before they start high school. 

I have been working non-stop since 1992 and have always dreamt of using my long service leave for something of value. Looking after the kids with their schooling and doing further Spanish language studies myself will be a great way to spend this time.”  

 While David is away Afternoon presenter Stacey Lee will join Will hosting Breakfast. Stacey previously hosted Breakfast for two years with the ABC in Adelaide, alongside Nikolai Beilharz.

Stacey said:

“Over the past two-and-a-half years, I’ve had the chance to really connect with the FIVEAA listeners in Afternoons, so it feels like a great next step to wake up with them. While I’ve done breakfast radio before, stepping back into it with Will and our FIVEAA audience is an exciting new chapter. I’m really looking forward to spending mornings with our listeners and having a laugh, keeping them informed, and being part of those everyday moments that matter.” 

David’s last David & Will show for 2026 airs Friday June 26. Stacey commences on Monday July 13. Leith Forrest moves to Afternoons, Matthew Pantelis will host evenings.
