FM proposed for all Launceston Stations

The Australian Broadcasting Authority has revised plans for FM radio in Launceston and wants to convert both commercial radio services and the ABC Local Radio service from AM to FM.

Acting ABA chief, Lyn Maddock, says: ‘The ABA is concerned that there are no commercial FM radio services in Launceston. The proposal would result in residents of Launceston having access to the improved sound quality of FM commercial radio, currently enjoyed in other Australian communities of comparable size.”

The ABA is proposing that 7LA operate on 89.3 FM and 7EX on 90.1. The Authority also wants ABC Local Radio move from 711 AM to 91.7 FM. The ABC’s national radio services, NewsRadio, Classic FM, Radio National and Triple J, all operate on the FM band in the Launceston region. FM conversion will also result in improved reception for Local Radio.

On the evidence before it, the ABA says it is not satisfied an extra community station in the Launceston market would add substantial diversity to the programs available in the market. One group, World Music Radio, has expressed interest in providing a multicultural community radio service in the area. The ABA notes the proposal to introduce a self help SBS radio service in Launceston (with Launceston City Council as licence holder) and will review the community radio situation in two years.

Before reaching a final decision on the proposals, the ABA is seeking comments on the revised draft variation to the Launceston radio licence area plan. This is available from the ABA or by calling 1 800 226 667. The closing date for submissions is 5pm, Friday 28 January.
