Fresh 927 dance music DJ killed by lightning strike

Adelaide community station Fresh 92.7 is in shock after one of its volunteer announcers was killed by a lightning strike in the Northern Territory this week

Antony Van Der Meer was on holidays at Kings Canyon with his wife Jessica and her family when he was struck by lightning about 5pm on New Year’s Day.

According to police, he had been carrying a camera tripod which acted as a conductor. Other family members were thrown to the ground by the force of the strike. Despite applying CPR immediately and medical attention from paramedics, he could not be revived after the lightning strike.

The bad weather conditions were the result of ex-tropical cyclone Hilda causing multiple storm fronts in the region.

Anthony had a full time job as a retail manager at a software company in Adelaide and had volunteered as a dance music presenter on Fresh since 2010. He was known on air as Trance. He presented the programs Freshly Squeezed from 2011-2012, and Studio 92 from 2013-2015.

An online fundraising page has been set up to support the Van Der Meer family.

The station posted this message on its facebook page. Funeral details are not known at this time.

Our condolences go out to Anthony’s family and friends.
