“Girls 4 Steak” Cancer Fundraiser

Star FM Albury host Kristie Mercer has been the driving force behind the annual fundraiser “Girls 4 Steak”, which saw 150 women come together to raise over $5300 for the National Breast Cancer Foundation on 3rd April.

The premise is grounded in her perception of the sexism surrounding the assumption of meal preferences for women, especially that of red meat. The event invites women to enjoy a steak whilst supporting breast cancer at the same time.

In what has become an annual Star FM event, tickets sold out for the second year running weeks before the night. A guest panel of cancer experts and cancer survivors made for emotional and touching start to the night that included an auction, live music, shirtless waiters and a group self-breast-check.

It also provided a means for current cancer patients a safe and comfortable environment free from judgment.

To raise awareness leading up to the night, the duo interviewed breast care nurses, cancer survivors and people who had been affected by the disease in a broader sense.
