Hail Storm proves Radio Immediacy

Radio has proven itself again as the place to turn in a crisis.

Late on Sunday afternoon, a major hail storm hit the Upper Hunter region of NSW, and 2NM and Power FM immediately went to air ‘live’ with regular updates and calls from listeners, giving detailed descriptions of damage to houses, trees and roads.

The local State Emergency Service also broadcast advice to residents on what action to do and who to contact.

Power FM’s Pete Davidson was quick to react by letting listener feedback drive his program, with callers from Singleton, Muswellbrook, Denman and Scone describing their individual stories.

One caller was close to tears as he explained how a giant hailstone struck the family dog on the head and killed it!

Rick Manchin had similar responses from callers on 2NM, and the listener reaction continued yesterday.

Local SES Commander, Ray Butchard, has praised the stations for their immediate and effective coverage. He has thanked General Manager, Daryl Egan, and his team for their prompt action.
