Ho Ho Hobart ABC Giving Tree returns

Tasmania’s favourite community Christmas tradition, the ABC Giving Tree, returns this week.

The 2017 ABC Giving Tree Appeal will be launched this Friday by 2017 Tasmanian Local Hero Judi Adams, during a live broadcast hosted by State-wide Mornings presenter Leon Compton.

The ABC’s Giving Tree Appeal is the biggest Christmas charity in the state.

For 29 years, it has supported nine charities to give disadvantaged and vulnerable people in the Tasmanian community the chance to share the joy of Christmas.

From this Friday until Thursday December 14, ABC Tasmania is encouraging people to donate money and gifts suitable for babies, children, young people and families to be distributed by the charities over the festive season.

New, unwrapped gifts can be dropped off at all ABC Centres, major LINCS and the three major UTAS campuses across the state.

Details for cash donations and further information can be found at the ABC Radio Hobart and ABC Northern Tasmania websites.

The charities receiving and distributing the donations are the Launceston Benevolent Society, Launceston City Mission, St Vincent de Paul Society, The Salvation Army, Uniting Care Tasmania, Hobart City Mission, Mission Australia, Anglicare and Colony47.

There will be fundraising quiz nights throughout the state and sales of the popular ABC weather calendar. Donations are also being collected from this year’s Glenorchy Carols by Candlelight supported by ABC Radio Hobart and hosted by Breakfast presenter Ryk Goddard, on Saturday December 9, from 6pm.

This year, the ABC Giving Tree Appeal is calling for the following suggested donations for particularly for young people, and their families:

  • Items for adults
  • Food vouchers (food only, no alcohol)
  • School holiday activity vouchers eg movie passes, bowling, playlands, etc.
  • Gift cards aimed at teens
  • Items for boys aged 9-12
