Holiday radio listening in the 10-17 demographic

The younger demographics skew listening patterns for Survey 1 every year, while the 10-17 demographic is on school holidays. What are they listening to and why?

‘Daniel,’ a listener in that demographic, reports on his radio consumption habits this January and assesses the success of Jackie O and Kyle’s move to drive on 2Day and Fox, which began this week:

“I have been listening to the ABC for cricket. I never listen to ABC 702 except for sport on Saturdays and cricket at this time every year. Mostly when we’re driving in the car or when I’m playing cricket in the back yard with my brother.

I also listen to Nova 969 when I wake up because 2DAY’s morning show is no good and Nova is the next best thing.

I mostly listen to 2DAY when I am at home. I like the changes they have made this week and listen in the afternoons and at night.

Kyle and Jackie O’s move to drive is a career change for the better. Apart from being able to watch the shows they like in Prime time, which they told us about on the first day they were on air, they can also show their funny and witty personalities much more and have longer interviews in this timeslot.

On their first day they interviewed Holly Valance, Ian ‘Dicko’ Dickson and Shannon Noll. They have introduced new competitions like ‘Ching Ching Ring’ and the Pop Quiz, which I like. They seem to be able to discuss topics for as long as they want, unlike the Hot 30 timeslot where they could only slip in shorter comments and jokes between the countdown songs.

LabRat will make a good new host for the Hot 30 in the evenings and this week Mama Jugs has been doing a very capable job on the show with him. I like the Grandma Idol competition they are running.

Kyle and Jackie O’s move to drive has been the best thing that has happened in their career and I will be listening to 2DAY more when I get home from school now that I have heard them during the holidays.”

Research by Arbitron People Meters in the USA recently also reported similar trends in 10-17 listening during the summer holidays. Click below for a report.

‘LabRat’ Jason Hawkins was a regular on the Hot 30 until last year and was sent to do Drive on Austereo’s Perth station in preparation for this latest move. Because he is “not as extreme” as Kyle, Austereo is looking for a “noisy” female to partner him with and is expected to try out different personalities over the next few months, including the current co-host Mama Jugs.

Kyle and Jackie O’s drive is being heard on Fox Melbourne and 2DAY Sydney initially, but may expand to other stations once it beds down. The Hot 30 is heard nationally.

Andy Park, who was filling in on Fox drive at the end of last year until the new show was introduced, is doing Fox afternoons from this week until a permanent replacement is named.

The new Fox breakfast team also began this week, with Matt Tilley being joined by Jo Stanley, Chris Bennett and Adam Richard after former host Tracey Bartram left at the end of last year. Their main rivals will be Nova 100’s Langbroek, O’Neil and Hughes, who also returned to air this week.

Nova Melbourne’s 2004 lineup is mostly unchanged from late last year, with a new team of Tim Arnold and Michele Anderson on nights, but other shifts resuming as they were before the holidays.

At Triple M, many shifts are being heard in both Sydney and Melbourne. Breakfast show The Cage will also be heard on Triple M Adelaide from this week. Afternoons is now the only totally local shift on Triple M in each city.
