John Kerr the Pirate broadcaster

2UE overnight broadcaster John Kerr is currently in the UK to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the end of pirate radio broadcasts off the coast of the UK.

MediaWeek reports that in the 60s Kerr was one of the DJs working off the coast of the UK for Radio Scotland. Kerr joined the station during the autumn of 1966 and stayed until the very last day.

In March 1967 Radio Scotland was fined for broadcasting inside territorial waters and the ship had to be towed to a new anchorage.

BBC Radio Essex is having a five-day broadcast from a boat off the coast with all the shifts being hosted by former pirate broadcasters. Kerr’s first shift started today at 10am Sydney time.
