Julian Abbott retires after 32 years reading ABC Canberra radio news

Canberra radio newsreader and broadcaster Julian Abbott wrapped up on Friday March 15 after a remarkable 32 years with the ABC.

Abbott started with the ABC in 1991 reading local radio news bulletins, on a two week contract. He went on to present sports results on Grandstand and covered Olympics and Commonwealth Games.

During the bushfires that affected Canberra in 2003 Abbott stayed in the radio news studio long after his shift finished, informing listeners. His rapport with the ACT and surrounds community was reflected in the many messages and tributes sent to him in his last week with Abbott recording the below video just prior to his last bulletin.

Abbott started his career at 3XY in Melbourne and later Canberra’s 2CA before his three decades at the ABC. He is retiring to spend more time travelling and with family.
