I’m in Melbourne at the moment and two passersby were talking about KIIS 97.3’s breakfast hosts Robin & Kip‘s revival of Sizzler. Everything about the promotion has struck a nostalgic chord with listeners and fans near and far.
On Tuesday night, July 16, the duo transformed The Coffee Club on Charlotte Street in Brisbane into an authentic Sizzler restaurant, with the night such a success that another sizzling announcement will be made this Friday.
When I worked at 4AK in Toowoomba we had a Sizzler almost across the road. Many a post shift discussion was held within its hallowed and dated decor walls.
Robin & Kip’s revival had all the beloved classics including the iconic Cheese Toast, the Pumpkin Soup, Spiral Pasta Bolognese, Potato Skins, the signature salad bar and the most wonderful dessert bar, complete with a soft-serve machine and a variety of toppings.
Remember how you’d have to stop pulling the handle early so as not to overflow your plate? Remember still overflowing it anyway??
There were guest appearances by Broncos legend Corey Oates and comedian Mel Buttle. Lucky listeners who won tickets to attend were served by original Sizzler staff members in their iconic uniforms.
Robin Bailey said:
“We’ve given away many things on this radio show, but I’ve never seen listeners more excited than to win a seat at our Sizzler pop-up! Last night was truly special.”
Kip Wightman added:
“I just wanted to enjoy the pumpkin soup again; turning it into a radio competition was an amazing bonus.”
The success and reach of the event and promotion has been impressive. Fans took to social platforms to share their excitement and fond memories, beg for tickets and amplify the event’s reach and engagement.
For those who missed out The Coffee Club has partnered with Sizzler to keep the secret recipe for the Cheese Toast a little longer. From July 24 every The Coffee Club nationally will be serving Sizzler Cheese Toast for 2 weeks or until stock runs out. As they say, she/he who hesitates misses out on the cheese toast.
