Lion FM meeting told of hopes for getting back on air

Members of Melbourne Jewish Radio’s Lion FM were told at the association’s annual meeting that there is still some hope for the station, despite losing its temporary community broadcasting licence earlier this year (see previous story). The association says it is in discussions with another Melbourne station for a time sharing deal.

The meeting was told that another unnamed broadcaster contacted MJR and offered to begin discussions about sharing a frequency. It is possible the unnamed broadcaster is a narrowcaster, but members were not told any details about the identity of the possible broadcast partner.  If it is a community broadcaster then that organisation would eventually be required to justify such a time sharing arrangement to ACMA. The AGM heard that the broadcaster is currently not using all of its air time.

The association has formed a joint venture with the unnamed broadcaster and hopes to have programming back on air in early October.

At the meeting, members also voted to accept a range of amendments to make the association’s rules compliant with ACMA requirements.

Lion FM had a temporary community broadcasting licence issued by the Australian Communications and Media Authority to broadcast in the FM band for an initial 12 month period that ended on 13 June 2011. Subsequently, Lion FM has been limited to streaming on the internet.
