A long time coming: Ben Fordham confesses to historical radio prank

Ben Fordham had a confession to make on his 2GB breakfast radio show yesterday.

It concerned two media personalities who have now passed away, 2UE evening presenter Stan Zemanek and Channel 7 boss David Leckie.

“I need to confess something, and this is a long time coming,” Ben Fordham began.

“Some years ago, I had been out to dinner with a few mates and I’d had a couple of drinks.

“I was in a taxi going home listening to Stan Zemanek and Stan started unloading on David Leckie and I thought, what would happen if I called up Stan pretending to be David Leckie.”

Zemanek was paying out on a Channel 7 publicist when the tipsy Fordham heard him in a cab on the way home from the pub. Pretending to be Leckie, he rang in to talk to Zemanek about the incident related to the show ‘Dancing with the Stars.’

During the call he offered Zemanek a slot on the next series of the TV dance competition. Zemanek declined.

“Has Channel 9 got you sewn up for a rival show,” asked the quick thinking Fordham as Leckie. “Is it Dancing with Stan?”

Delving through the audio archives, Fordham retrieved the audio and played it after telling the story on the day that David Leckie was laid to rest.
