It appears that the possible release from jail brothers Erik and Lyle Menendez is about as hot a topic as the upcoming US elections. The true crime Netflix series Monsters first reignited debate about the 1989 fatal shooting of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in Beverly Hills, California. The pair were sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.
Now with resentencing days away, just like the election, Menendez brothers mania has reached our shore with a new podcast and interviews with key participants in the trial.
On Adelaide’s Mix102.3, breakfast hosts Max & Ali, Max Burford and Ali Clarke, nabbed an exclusive interview with juror #9 in the first trial of the Menendez Brothers, Hazel Thornton. Hazel said that not only does she believe they should be let out on parole but she’d be delighted if they moved next door:
“It’s been 30 years, the longer the time goes by, the more I believe them.”
You can listen to the chat above.
Australian podcast production company Podshape has also launched a new series called Menendez vs Monsters about the case, the Netflix show and featuring an interview with Cliff Gardner, the lawyer for the brothers.
