Mental health battle sparks idea for radio show

Mark Aiston has resigned from Adelaide’s FIVEaa after a 35 year relationship with the station to pursue his own show about mental health.

“The show will be called the Mental Health Show and the aim of the show is to be uplifting to its listeners,” Mark says.

“I will have a guest expert during the first 30 minutes, and expert in their field of addiction, depression, anxiety etc.”

“During the second half of the show I will be interviewing someone who has been down and out but have fought back and are now doing well,” he explains.

The idea for the show is based around Mark’s own battles and experiences with mental health.

“I am very passionate because of my mother’s battle with depression and my battle with depression and addiction.”

It was in 2014 while hosting FIVEaa breakfast and appearing weeknights as sport’s presenter on Channel Ten, Mark suddenly quit his TV role citing a stress related illness.

“It’s just become evident that I can’t do both jobs, which is a shame … in the end it was a decision that had to be made from a health point of view,”  he told the Advertiser at the time.

Mark is currently negotiating with a number of stations as to who will air his show.

“At this stage, I am talking to WOWFM Adelaide and Hills Radio, I am also hoping Fresh 92.7 and Life FM will take it.

“I will also be speaking with the national community radio organization about stations in other states taking the show as well.”

Mark also has plans to turn the Mental Health Show into a Podcast.

“It sounds a bit selfish, but I will get as much out of the show as I hope the listeners will.”
