Meshel labels Eddie “a pig”

KIIS 101.1, Meshel Laurie has said Eddie McGuire should not be allowed to broadcast on air, following his comments about Caroline Wilson being drowned in support of the Freeze for MND last week where he said: “I reckon we should start the campaign for a one person slide next year, Caroline Wilson, and I’ll put in $10,000 straight away, make it $20,000, and if she stays under, $50,000”.

One of the other commentators responded by saying he’d “hold her under”.

You can hear the audio and Eddie’s apology on Triple M here.

Meshel said Eddie was “a pig, who was unable to speak without encouraging violence against women, and should be not be allowed on air“.

Speaking to listeners and co-host Matt Tilley, Meshel said:

“To be honest, it’s no more or less than I would expect from someone who compared Adam Goodes to King Kong. I mean, you know what, you’re a pig. And you have no compunction in casual racism, and so to suggest that it would be hilarious to drown a woman and have all your mates, and call them in on it…”

Meshel went on to say, “Listen I’m aware there will be blowback because people will say that I’m criticising Eddie McGuire because he rates higher than I do on Melbourne radio, I think they will say that. Because I am saying absolutely fundamentally, that he should not be allowed to broadcast. This is a man who cannot speak without spreading hate and now encouraging violence against women. He should not be allowed to broadcast, it’s that simple.”

Matt Tilley said the story may have been different had they not targeted a female journalist: “If that was a male journalist, if that was Mark Robinson who had been giving them all grief and writing them up and touching them up, and they said that, probably no one would blink. They’d go, ‘oh that’s just someone they don’t like’.”

Meshel responded: “Men aren’t murdered at a rate of one a week in Australia… I draw the line at making fun of drowning a woman.”
