Broadcaster, podcaster, former voice of Big Brother Australia and son of 2SM legend the late Grant Goldman, Mike Goldman shakily recounted watching his home go up in flames on KIIS 97.3’s Robin, Kip & Corey Oates.
His family home in Bulimba, Brisbane, burnt down overnight due to a fuse box fault. Mike got his wife and baby out safely before running back into home to rescue his dog, Mr Big.
Listen below.
Robin Bailey: What happened?
Mike: His room [Mike’s son, Jagger] is totally gone now. The garage is underneath his room and there’s a fuse box there. And maybe it could have been the solar from like 12 years ago or something. Forensics are having a look at it right now but it’s pretty scary. The fire alarm went off in the middle of the night and I thought it was just to replace the battery or something. I saw the smoke and realised, got Bianca and Jagger up and just ran outside. And then the dog hadn’t followed me, and I’ve run back in looking for the dog. Oh man, that was probably the scariest ten minutes of my life to find the bloody dog. The fire brigade showed up, they put it out and probably, I mean, the house is gone. I don’t think it’s salvageable, but it’s just really shocking, man.
Robin: Mike, your dog. What happened with your dog?
Mike: Mr Big is okay. He was a little, white, fluffy Pomeranian. But now he’s a grey Pomeranian.
Robin: Is Bianca okay? That’s terrifying.
Mike: Yeah, she’s pretty shaken up. I mean, she kept all her memorabilia in the garage. It’s all gone and like all my tapes from TV shows, from Big Brother, Friday Night Games and other random movies and things, I kept down there. Yeah, well, you know, you can’t replace humans, I guess.
Kip Wightman: Because Jagger’s just, what, one and a half?
Mike: Yeah.
Kip: Yeah. So, what happened? You got outside and then had you guys been sort of hanging around the street? What do you do?
Mike: I just went around waking the neighbours up and banging on the doors to wake them up because we didn’t have our phones, so we needed someone else to call the fire brigade. So, I’m banging on the doors to wake people up in case the fire spread to the next house, but it didn’t. The fire brigade put it out and everything’s okay, but it was a spectacle, that’s for sure, for a good few hours from 4am in Bulimba.
Robin & Kip now with Corey Oates can be heard from 5.30am on KIIS 97.3 in Brisbane, or on the free iHeart App. Mike Goldman image from Facebook.
