Mike Williams (pictured) is continuing to stretch the boundaries of what an audio documentary can be. He and street photographer Alex McClintock will perform a new live, genre-bending slideshow documentary at Sydney Fringe Festival 2025 called 24 Hours in Kings Cross.
Audiences will be charmed by the Cross’ long-term residents, surprised by its wild history and thrilled to meet tattoo artists, sex shop clerks, drag queens, historians, party-goers and more. Material was gathered over a sleepless 24-hour blitz with the result a mix of live narration, recorded interviews, music and photo projections.
Mike, recently appointed LiSTNR Head of Entertainment & Culture, said said the multimedia Kings Cross show is the next step after his successful Wide World of Marrickville at the Sydney Fringe in 2024:
“I’ve been performing ‘live audio documentary’ shows since 2016, but this is the first time I’ve brought in visuals. Alex has been documenting Kings Cross for a long time and I’ve been obsessed with the place for ages, so this feels right.”
Alex added:
“This story is a love letter to the suburb. This is a show for locals, for visitors and for anyone who’s seen a sunrise from a Kings Cross smoking area.”
Wide World of Marrickville was a finalist for Best Storytelling Award at Sydney Fringe 2024. Some of Alex’s pictures from the show have already been selected as finalists in the Rome Photo Lab International Street Photography Competition. The project will run for eight-nights from September 10-20 at Sean & Dolly’s — Kings Cross’ newest live music and performance venue.
