Mildura’s thirst for live music satisfied with triple j’s One Night Stand

Every year triple j takes a bunch of Australia’s best musos to a regional town – one that’s starved of live music – to put on a free concert the likes of which the area has never seen.

This year the One Night Stand took over Mildura, on the Murray River, where over 17,000 locals and visitors joined hundreds of thousands of listeners tuning in on the radio and TV.

triple j Unearthed winners, WZRDKID, opened the festival stage with an energetic hip hop set, which was only their second gig – but you’d never guess. They were followed by The Jungle Giants who took the crowd through a series of sing-a-longs, setting the scene for the rest of the day. Next up were Violent Soho, with Raul Sanchez from Magic Dirt filling in on guitar, whose punk ramblings and impressive head banging all culminated in one massive moshpit screaming ‘hell fuck yeah!’ to their Hottest 100 hit ‘Covered In Chrome’.

Later, ultimate entertainer, Dan Sultan, was joined on stage by Kingswood singing backing vocals and Seamus Davidson on banjo for a rousing rendition of ‘The Same Man’. RÜFÜS sent the concert into full party mode, playing dance favourites ‘Take Me’ and ‘Desert Night’, with a special guest appearance by Nicole Millar to sing ‘Unforgiven’. Closing the night with confetti cannons, Illy had the whole crowd jumping to his arsenal of hits, new and old, and brought out a few high profile surprise guests, including Drapht to perform ‘YoYo’ and Vance Joy to play a very special version of his #1 Hottest 100 song ‘Riptide’.

Beaming the concert live around the country, presenters Matt & Alex and Zan Rowe broadcast a combined total of over 8 hours of non-stop concert coverage, including massive live sets straight from the stage, as well as artist interviews and all the action from backstage, live on triple j radio. Listeners could also watch videos, read blogs and flick through photo galleries on the triple j website and social media – uploaded as they happened.

Over the coming weeks, triple j will replay the performances on Live At The Wireless. Plus you can stream the One Night Stand concert on iView now.
